Founder Learnings · Things I underestimated as a founder · Nº 03
Funding is fuel. Not the finish line.
Why I now tell founders to chase the KPI, not the round.

Closing a funding round gets celebrated as a huge milestone. And it is one: someone believes in your team, your idea and your business. That matters.
But here is what nobody tells you: the day the money lands, the game changes.
The story you pitched becomes the bar
Suddenly you are measured against your own plans and projections. The story you pitched becomes the bar you are held to. Changing direction now costs more, because every pivot needs explaining, and the agility that made you fast in bootstrapping mode quietly shrinks.
Investors stay in the room for years
The people whose money you took are in the room for years. Picking the right investors is as crucial as hiring your core team. Whether strategic or venture, it is a relationship you live with through every hard decision ahead.
Raising is not the finish line. It is neither easier nor harder than going without – it is a different game with different rules.
Inputs are not achievements
And here is the trap. The raise itself is not the milestone, and neither is doubling your team. Those are inputs, not achievements. The real milestones are the KPIs you set out to hit: the revenue, the retention, the proof that the thing works.
Money and headcount are fuel. Fuel gets you somewhere, but it is not the destination. Be clear about where you are actually going before you celebrate having more of it.
What I tell founders today
Before you raise, ask the harder question. Not how much can I get, but what am I trading for it. Funding is fuel – never the finish line.
Did raising change your company in ways you didn't expect?
